This is the driving force behind ECOALJIBE, an innovation project developed by NexBiolinea to optimise the cleaning and disinfection of potable water storage tanks through circular economy principles, improved water efficiency and the highest sanitary standards.

The latest project results were presented by Catalina Bibiloni, Head of Sustainability at NexBiolinea, during the final event of the European CESAM project, held in Toulouse. The event brought together companies, technology centres, research organisations and public institutions committed to innovation and sustainability across Europe.

Applied innovation with real impact

ECOALJIBE was created with a clear objective: to develop an innovative methodology capable of significantly reducing the amount of water required for cleaning and disinfecting potable water storage tanks while maintaining full compliance with health regulations and ensuring maximum sanitary safety.

The project has enabled NexBiolinea to design, optimise and validate a new technical protocol that improves resource efficiency, reduces environmental impact and demonstrates how circular economy principles can be successfully integrated into water management practices.

From research to real-world implementation

One of ECOALJIBE’s greatest strengths is that the innovation has been validated under real operating conditions.

Throughout the project, NexBiolinea implemented the methodology in hotels, tourist apartments, residential facilities and other collective-use buildings, carrying out microbiological analyses, technical monitoring and operational evaluations to demonstrate both its effectiveness and practical feasibility.

As a result, the project successfully advanced the solution from Technology Readiness Level (TRL) 6 to TRL 7, confirming its applicability in real operational environments.

Our Canary Islands delegation consolidates the certification of its environmental and agri-food laboratory for food, water and surfaces, reinforcing our presence and our commitment to quality in the archipelago.

HOTECMA, our school, also renews

This commitment to quality also extends to HOTECMA, our training school, which —together with ASIMA and the FEHM— renews its certification once again, ensuring that our training activity in public health and safety, sustainability and the environment is delivered under the same standards of excellence that govern the rest of our services.

Training is a key part of our purpose: to transfer rigorous, up-to-date knowledge to the sector. The fact that our school maintains this certification is the best guarantee that those who train with us do so within a solid and recognized quality system.

In line with this commitment, NexBiolinea has expanded its ENAC accreditation scope under the UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard, incorporating new accredited tests within our water microbiology and food microbiology areas.

This expansion represents another step forward in our strategy of continuous improvement, technical investment and consolidation as a laboratory specialized in environmental health, food safety and microbiological control for the tourism and hospitality sector.

What does it mean for a laboratory to be accredited by ENAC?

The Spanish National Accreditation Body (ENAC) is the organization responsible in Spain for assessing and recognizing the technical competence of laboratories according to international standards.

For testing laboratories, accreditation is granted under the UNE-EN ISO/IEC 17025 standard, the international benchmark that establishes the requirements laboratories must meet in order to demonstrate:

• technical competence,
• analytical reliability,
• traceability of results,
• internal quality control,
• method validation,
• equipment calibration,
• staff qualification,
• and assurance of impartiality.

In other words, working with an accredited laboratory means working with technically validated and internationally recognized results.

For sensitive sectors such as hospitality, tourism, the food industry or the management of health-risk facilities, this aspect is essential.

New accredited tests incorporated by NexBiolinea

As part of this accreditation scope expansion, NexBiolinea has incorporated new accredited tests of major sanitary and operational relevance.

Among them are:

Pseudomonas aeruginosa in water

The detection of Pseudomonas aeruginosa is one of the most important microbiological controls in certain aquatic and sanitary installations.

This opportunistic microorganism is associated with health risks in water systems and humid environments, particularly in facilities with high user exposure.

The accreditation of this test strengthens our analytical capabilities in areas such as:

• microbiological water control,
• swimming pools and spas,
• hotel facilities,
• drinking water,
• and sanitary prevention programs.

Escherichia coli in food

The accredited incorporation of Escherichia coli testing in food represents a significant advancement within our food microbiology services.

This parameter is one of the main microbiological indicators of hygiene and food safety and plays a key role in:

• HACCP controls,
• process validation,
• hygienic-sanitary control,
• incident investigation,
• and verification of good handling practices.

In an environment where food safety has an increasingly important operational and reputational impact, having accredited tests provides significant added value for both hotel establishments and food business operators.

Total coliforms in water

This expansion also includes the accredited testing of total coliforms in water, a parameter widely used as a microbiological indicator of sanitary quality and hygienic control.

These analyses are essential for:

• verifying the microbiological quality of water,
• detecting potential contamination,
• evaluating treatment effectiveness,
• and ensuring compliance with sanitary and operational requirements.

Much more than a certification

ENAC accreditation should not be understood merely as a documentary distinction.

Behind every accreditation there is a complete technical system based on:

• Co-author of the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) guidelines for Legionella prevention.
